Meeting the needs for variant hemoglobin & thalassemia detection
A Stronger Lineup of Diabetes Test Instruments

On 24 January, ARKRAY, Inc. will release the glycated-hemoglobin analyzers ADAMS A1c HA-8180V and ADAMS A1c HA-8180T. These will be used for the detection of variant hemoglobin*1 and for the screening of β-thalassemia*2 so as to answer new market needs within the diabetes testing field.

Within the field of diabetes testing, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is used as a marker which reflects the average blood glucose value over the past 1-2 months. This is very important for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. As such, there is great demand for the quick and accurate HbA1c measurement within diabetes testing and these tests are performed on glycated-hemoglobin analyzers to meet this need. International standardization in this area has progressed over the past few years and the number of patients in Japan with variant hemoglobin (which can affect HbA1c results) and thalassemia has seen an increase. This has resulted in heightened demand for in-house detection of variant hemoglobin.

ARKRAY will release the two glycated-hemoglobin analyzers, ADAMS A1c HA-8180V and ADAMS A1c HA-8180T as products within the ADAMS series. They will have sufficient performance for the high-precision measurement of HbA1c combined with the ability to separate out and detect commonly-occurring variant hemoglobin types. By separating variant hemoglobin, ARKRAY can meet new testing needs in the market and achieve an even more accurate level of HbA1c measurement. In the past, these instruments were sold first in overseas markets with a great number of patients with variant hemoglobin, but these systems will now go on sale in Japan to meet increased demand there.

ARKRAY developed and released its first fully-automatic HbA1c analyzer back in 1981 and since then, HbA1c measurement has become more widespread as diabetes testing entered a new era. ARKRAY is a pioneer in diabetes testing and will continue to provide products that address a wide range of needs within the medical field.

Main product features

•2 modes to better address diabetes testing needs (ADAMS A1c HA-8180V)

Variant mode combines measurement of both HbA1c and HbF with detection of variant hemoglobins HbS and HbC*1 for a measurement time of 90 seconds. Where detection of variant hemoglobin is not required, the system can be switched to a 48 second HbA1c Fast Mode for increased testing efficiency.

•β-thalassemia screening (ADAMS A1c HA-8180T)

By combing the measurement of HbA1c with HbF and HbA2, the system can be used for screening of β-thalassemia. In addition, the detection of HbS, HbC, HbE and HbD*1 further adds to the accuracy of measurement results.

•High precision and high speed measurement

The HbA1c measurement precision from HPLC*3 within the ADAMS series is combined with detection of variant hemoglobins to offer even higher precision results. Measurement with the HA-8180V (in Variant mode) takes just 90 seconds while measurement with the HA-8180T takes 210 seconds.

•Easy maintenance

Consumables can be replaced easily without any need for tools. The column and pre-filter are incorporated into a single design so there is no need to replace the pre-filter separately.

Glossary:

*1 Variant hemoglobin
Genetic mutations result in the replacement of constituent amino acids within the hemoglobin inside red blood cells. This affects the 3D structure of the hemoglobin. There are a number of different types of variant hemoglobin with HbS, HbC, HbE and HbD being the most well known.

*2 β-thalassemia
This is caused by problems in the production of beta chains which make up hemoglobin and is a hereditary disease. β-thalassemia is known to cause increases in HbA2 and HbF.

*3 HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography)
HPLC is a method to separate out different components from a mixture and to determine the ratio of each component. ARKRAY was the first company to develop a dedicated HbA1c analyzer using the HPLC method back in 1981. These instruments are still in use in the medical field today. The latest model, the ADAMS A1c HA-8181 uses the HPLC method for high-precision measurement and is capable of running a sample in just 38 seconds.
